Doris Rivera-Black has a dramatic testimony of living in an abusive marriage for five years. Her once sweet and gentle husband turned daily life into a nightmare of irrational jealousy, controlling behaviour, verbal abuse, psychological manipulation and sexual assault. But due to her guilt over a failed first marriage and her religious upbringing, Doris felt compelled to continually forgive her abuser and try to “fix” her marriage. However, when her daughter shared that she feared for her mother’s safety every time she was alone with her stepfather, Doris took action to separate. Her husband retaliated by kidnapping her at gunpoint, sexually abusing her and planning to kill her. Miraculously Doris escaped, gave her life to Christ, learned to forgive her abuser and now has a ministry, offering help and healing to other victims of domestic violence.
