When you’re running behind schedule, behind on your goals, and behind where you thought you’d be, remember that God’s timeline is different than yours, and His grace is bigger than your delays.
Let’s be honest about where many of us are right now: behind.
Behind on those year-end reports. Behind on Christmas shopping. Behind on responding to emails. Behind on event preparation. Behind on the goals we set for ourselves at the start of the year. Behind on sleep. Behind on our health. Behind on where we imagined we’d be by now.
And if we’re really honest, there’s a gnawing anxiety that comes with being behind – a voice that whispers we’re failing, that we should be doing more, that everyone else has it together while we’re still scrambling to catch up.
But what if being “behind” isn’t the crisis we think it is.
God’s Timeline vs. Ours
Our culture is obsessed with schedules, deadlines, and productivity. We measure success by how much we accomplish and how quickly we accomplish it. But God operates on a completely different timeline.
Ecclesiastes 3:1, 11 tells us, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens… He has made everything beautiful in its time.”
What we perceive as “behind” may actually be exactly where God intends us to be. He makes things beautiful in His time, not ours. The pressure we feel to be “on schedule” is often self-imposed, not God-imposed.
Let’s think about it – Abraham and Sarah received their promised son when they were well past typical childbearing years. Moses was 80 when God called him to lead Israel out of Egypt – way “behind” a typical career timeline.
God’s timeline rarely matches our expectations, and that’s not a problem because it’s His design.
God Completes What He Starts
Philippians 1:6 reminds us, “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.“
Our job isn’t to frantically catch up to some arbitrary deadline. What we need to do is to faithfully walk with Him, trusting that He will finish what He started. The pressure to have everything done by a certain date often comes from our own expectations or cultural pressures, not from God.
This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t work hard or be responsible. It means we can rest in knowing that God is sovereign over our circumstances, timelines, and limitations.
When We Stumble, God Upholds Us
Psalm 37:23-24 assures us, “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.”
God is guiding our steps, even the ones that feel slow or stumbling. Even when we’re not moving as fast as we’d like, we’re not falling – He’s holding us up. Our productivity doesn’t determine His love, nor does our ability to stay “on schedule” affect His faithfulness to us.
What Being “Behind” Might Actually Teach Us
Sometimes, God allows us to fall behind for reasons that have nothing to do with our failure and everything to do with His purposes in our lives.
1. We are not God
The illusion that we can control our schedules, accomplish everything, and stay “on track” is exactly that – an illusion. Being behind reminds us of our limitations and our need for God’s strength.
When we’re forced to acknowledge we can’t do it all, we’re positioned to experience God’s grace in profound ways.
2. Grace is Greater Than Our Productivity
Our value doesn’t come from what we accomplish – it comes from being children of God. He doesn’t love us more when we’re “caught up” on everything.
Being behind can actually be a gift that forces us to acknowledge that our worth is not linked to our productivity. It helps us realise that God’s love is unconditional and has nothing to do with our performance.
3. Margin Matters
God allows us to fall behind sometimes so that we learn to build more realistic schedules and healthier boundaries. When we’re constantly running behind, it’s often a sign that we’ve overcommitted. Being behind can be an invitation to evaluate what’s truly important and what we need to release.
4. Behind isn’t the Same as Wrong
You can be behind schedule and still be exactly where God wants you. Don’t confuse cultural expectations or self-imposed deadlines with God’s will for your life.
Maybe you’re behind on your career goals because God wants you to invest in relationships. Perhaps you’re behind on housework because you’re caring for someone who is sick. Or you may be behind on personal projects because you’ve been faithful in other responsibilities.
Being behind doesn’t automatically mean you’re doing something wrong.
Practical Steps Forward
So, what do we do when we’re feeling behind? Here are some practical steps:
- Give Yourself Permission to Let Some Things Go
Not everything on your list has to get done. Ask yourself, and God, “What really matters right now? What can wait? What can I release entirely?”
- Extend to Yourself the Grace You’d Give a Friend
If someone you loved came to you feeling behind and overwhelmed, you’d offer them compassion, not condemnation. You’d remind them that their worth is not linked to their productivity. You’d encourage them to be kind to themselves.
Do the same for yourself. Speak to yourself with the same grace and kindness you’d offer to others.
- Do the Next Right Thing – Just the Next One
You don’t have to catch up on everything today. You just need to take one faithful step forward. What’s the next right thing in front of you?
Sometimes, the next right thing is to work on a project. Other times, it’s to rest, pray, or ask for help. Trust God to show you what that next step is, and trust Him with everything else.
Remember: God’s work through us doesn’t depend on our perfect execution.
He uses imperfect people with incomplete to-do lists all the time. God doesn’t need you to have everything figured out or completed. You’re not as behind as you think. You’re right where you need to be.
So, give yourself permission to be human and the grace that God has already extended to you. Trust that even when you’re “behind,” God’s timeline is perfect. His grace is sufficient, and you are exactly where you need to be today.
