It may not be the chores that exhaust us. It is remembering they need to be done.
Have you ever noticed that some things around the house just… happen?
- The dentist appointment gets booked
- The lawn is mowed before it turns into scrub land
- The birthday gift arrives on time
- The car is serviced
- The school permission slip is submitted
- The dripping tap finally gets fixed
- There’s milk in the fridge
- The insurance is renewed
- The bins make it to the kerb
- The tradie gets organised
- The uniforms are clean for Monday morning
It all looks effortless. Until you stop and ask yourself…
Who remembered?
Who noticed?
Who planned?
Who anticipated?
Who carried that little task around in their head until it was finally crossed off the list?
We call this “the invisible load” or “emotional labour.” I simply think of it as the mental juggling act of keeping life moving.
After years of working with couples, I’ve noticed something. The arguments are rarely about the lawn, or the dinner, or the dishes, or the car service.
They’re about the weight of constantly feeling like the one who has to remember.
One partner may be quietly carrying the family calendar. The other may be thinking about the weight of the mortgage, the home maintenance, the next service on the car, or whether the smoke alarm batteries need replacing. Both are carrying responsibilities – they just aren’t always carrying the same ones.
The problem isn’t usually that one person does everything.
We notice the weight we’re carrying… but can miss the weight our partner is carrying too.
The invisible load only becomes visible when we start talking about it.
❤️ This Week’s Reset
One of the kindest questions you can ask your partner is not…
“What do you need me to do?“
It’s…
“What have you been carrying that I haven’t noticed?“
Sometimes the greatest act of love isn’t doing another job. It’s recognising the invisible one.
☕ One Tiny Experiment
This week, take ten minutes together. Grab a coffee? Sit on the back deck? Go for a walk?
Then ask each other: “What’s one thing you quietly keep track of that I probably take for granted?“
No interrupting. No defending. No scorekeeping. Just curiosity.
You might be surprised how much appreciation grows when invisible work finally has a voice.

🤍 One Invitation
If you’ve found yourselves having the same argument on repeat…you’re not alone.
Often, the issue is not lack of love, but awareness.
Sometimes one conversation is all it takes to begin seeing each other differently.
